The above blog is a beautiful tribute to one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I have to admit I am a little partial because that is where my dad’s side of the family is from, so I happen to have an incredible love and appreciation of the Bayou.
Swamp People is on the History Channel and not for the faint of heart. It’s about real people who catch ‘gators for a living who go into highly risky situations. I thought that adding this page would add a certain flavor to the overall theme of this site…after all, watching the real deal Cajuns in the swamp is not a common sight for us city folk. Hopefully, it will reach out to the people who will appreciate the amazing amount of labor and love the cast puts into their work. For the record, I’ve been on the Bayou more times than I can count, but I’ve never been involved in any ‘gator hunting and never see myself doing that, but have had a bite or two of the reptile when visiting Louisiana. Thanks, Grampa, for making me take that first bite so many years ago. My running joke every time my dad took me to see his daddy and momma would be, “I need my passport.” You see, I grew up between NYC and Berkeley, so to go to Lousiana was such a whole, different kind of experience, but I loved it every time and to this day know some of the best people I will ever know because of my visits to this State still run by Napoleonic Law.
And though I have many kinfolk in Louisiana, the people in this show are not related to me nor do I know them personally. I just wanted to pay tribute to them and a part of Reality TV that we don’t see all that often and introduce another side of Louisiana.
Cast of Characters:
Auston Yoches:
Copy and paste pic taken from History.com.
Austin works with his cousin Blake McDonald. They are both very young, Austin is 21 years old, and they have a lot to prove in this land of the wild bayou frontier.
Pic taken from History.com
Blake McDonald is 5 years older than Austin and they live together on a houseboat Cajun-style. Here is an example of a houseboat (not saying at all this is where they live because I have NO idea where they live), but this is a classic example of what I am referring to.
):
Bruce Mitchell
Copy and paste from History.com: A lifelong swamper, Bruce Mitchell has always been known as a renegade. With nobody but his trusty dog Tyler at his side, he’s relied on his relentless work ethic to make his way to the top. Bruce may seem rough around the edges but he’s got a soft side too, which he showed last season while teaching greenhorn Nick the tricks of the trade. Now, when I watched the last season I can tell you that he enjoyed teaching Nick, but he doesn’t look like he made the cut to be a professional ‘gator catcher. Nick really gave it all he got, too. Will be interesting to see if there will be more of him on the show.
This season, Bruce is eager to get back to business and snag the biggest gators of his career, helped along by his new secret weapon: sniper Rob Methvin.
Picture of Ron Methvin taken from History.com
Copy and paste from History.com: trained sharpshooter and military veteran who served in Afghanistan, Ron Methvin is Bruce Mitchell’s secret weapon this season. While other hunters will be confined to hunting their lines, Ron will enable Bruce to bag elusive gators that rarely bite the hook. His time in the armed forces taught him discipline, strategy and skill. Bruce has long been one of the swamp’s most prolific hunters, but with Ron at his side, no gator is beyond their reach.
Pic taken from History.com
Chase Landry, son of Troy Landry.
He is trying to follow in his father’s footsteps, a man who has created a really good living in ‘gator hunting. Good luck, Chase. You have your work cut out for you…
Picture taken from History.com
Troy Landry, father of Chase
This man has one of the strongest and most hard to understand Cajun accents on the show, but that is what makes him that much more fun to watch. I look forward to seeing how he teaches his son.
Picture taken from History.com
Clint Landry is not one of Troy’s sons, but has been his right-hand man and sniper for many years. Apparently he took off last season but is back and ready to shoot ‘gators.
Picture taken from History.com
Glenn and Mitchell Guist. A picture says a thousand years and you can tell by these two they have been doing this longer than most others in this line of work. They live off the land and are genuine Cajuns through and through.
Picture taken form History.com
Jay Paul Molinere, son of R.J. He wants to take over the family business one day. They are best friends and Jay has a son as well. This could be an empire-in-the-making…
Picture taken from poptower.com
R.J. Molinere came onto the scene last year and caught some of the biggest ‘gators, creating a name for himself. He is also Native American and a world-champion arm wrestler.
Picture taken from History.com
Joe La Font and Tommy Chauvin. Joe is the stepfather to Tommy and they always deliver the goods. Joe is passing on the family secrets including “goo goo” juice to help catch ‘gators.
Picture taken from History.com
Junior Edwards is focusing on catching one of the biggest alligators of all times – 14 feet. He works with Willie Edwards, his son. They are two very tough competitors in this world of Swamp People. Also, they are working with son/brother Randy Edwards.

Picture of Kristi Broussard taken from History.com
Copy and paste from History.com: An independent woman and true Cajun who was born and bred on the bayou, Kristi Broussard grew up in a predominantly French-speaking family; in fact, her grandparents never even learned English. Kristi spent four years in the Navy and now owns a ranch in southern Louisiana, where she breaks horses for a living. This will be her first season working alongside her close friend Liz Cavalier.
Picture of Liz Cavalier taken from History.com
Copy and paste from History.com: No-nonsense “swamp lady” Liz Cavalier is still making waves in the traditionally male-dominated world of gator hunting. After legendary hunter Troy Landry hired Liz as his helper last season, she quickly earned the nickname “Lucky Liz” and amassed hundreds of her own tags. This season, Liz is flying solo and captaining her own boat. She’s hired her friend Kristi to help out, making their boat the only all-female operation on the bayou. From Nicole, editor: I need a “like” button for this last sentence.

Malcom McQuiston He will be working with the Edwards clan and has been doing this over 60 years. He is the only fisherman they trust to help get the job done.

So, delicious! We stoeppd by today, and it was worth it! It’s tucked away in a parking lot, away from the other PSU foodcarts, so it’s easy to miss. But you would be missing out!The owner was kind enough to let us get combo plates. I had the jambalaya (mildly spicy) and shrimp etouffee (which was outstanding). My friend had jambalaya and gumbo (absolutely delicious as well). If you can’t decide there are free samples which will help you pick. And everything is around $6.I forsee some more fixins’ in my near future again
Bayou Fixin’s has delicious Cajun food. They are geeornus in providing customers (or those simply curious) with samples of their cooking. A couple that came right up after me to the cart were originally from New Orleans. All three of us stood around for a few minutes taste testing the samples and chatting. Here is their opinion: Bajou Fixin’s provides the real thing and they cook it great. The word the couple used was delicious.I’m from Chicago and my ability to handle super hot spicy food is limited. No problem at BF. The food has some bite to it yet it isn’t overdone with the spiciness. There are spices available to increase the heat level and the cooks at BF seem happy to accommodate people.Upon my request, Kerry combined Etoufee, Smack and Cheese, and Jambalaya onto my plate. Five hours later, I still feel relaxed and happy from the food. The main entrees are priced at $5-6 and I’m surprised that they can provide such great food for such an inexpensive price. One of the two cooks at BF is was born and raised in Louisiana. The other is a native Portlander. Presently, Food Carts Portland has the wrong number listed. The correct phone number for BF is 503-739-2811I’ll be back for more.
Bayou Fixins (now @SE 50th Ave) Smack n Cheese’ and their coleslaw are good cajun food. Food is fforavlul, has a little bite, and the spice level is moderate to medium. They have extra hot sauces to play with too. If you are going to do what I did for dessert and eat the double-chocolate praline brownie, do yourself a favor: take it home, cut it in half and give the other half to a friend. Then eat the brownie alongside a glass of cold milk. It is that good and rich!
